Funchal port continues to lead the national movement of tourists from cruise ships. In 2011, it was registered in Funchal port 540,180 passengers on 303 calls, meaning that there was a increase of 10% in passenger traffic and 3% on the number of calls.

In a press conference, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Funchal Port Authority Ms. Alexandra Mendonça reported the positive results of the cruise industry in 2011 and 2012 perspective as "a good year, because it should keep the growth trend, now with 334 reservations."

Ms. Mendonça highlighted Funchal as a turnaround port, mentioning the important interface between the port and airport allowing visitors to stay a few days before or after the cruise in Madeira Island, a bet that "things have been very positive."

Thus, the number of embarking passengers increased from 5046 to 7978 and the disembarking passengers from 4795 to 7854, which translates into an increase in the percentage of variation of 58% embarked and 64% disembarked against previous year.

The year 2011, also featured the return of cruise ships at Porto Santo receiving six calls with total of 2,609 passengers.

During December there were 45 calls and a movement of 73,370 passengers, 1,075 embarked and 971 disembarked.

The best month in terms of movements of ships and passengers was November was usually one of the busiest months when many ships cross the Atlantic to reposition in the Caribbean and South America.This month there were 50 calls and a movement of 84,926 passengers.

At the press conference, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Funchal Port Authority also drew attention to the partnerships that the Port Authority maintains with the Canary Islands and Portuguese ports and noted that next year will keep the shares in major trade shows, direct contact with the companies and joint working with the shipping agents.

Fest20Atlantico-d December 8th to January 6th - Christmas and New-Year Festivities at Madeira Island

December commemorates the Christmas season arrival of commonly known as "A Festa", a particular festive season which is lived intensely with a special feeling by the people of Madeira.
In Madeira, Christmas and New Year celebrations offer a program filled with a variety of religious, ethnographic and artistic events that last until January 6th. Funchal’s downtown area is therefore overflowed with music, colour and light.
The beginning of the Christmas and New Year program is therefore an event that brings both locals and visitors together, which culminates with the spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display at the amphitheatre of the Funchal bay, an event which has been officially recognized by the Guinness book of Records in 2006 as the largest firework display in the world.
